２０年ぶりに横須賀からフェリーに乗って猿島を訪れた。猿島は東京湾に浮かぶ唯一の自然島。猿はいない。かつて時化に遭った日蓮の船に忽然と白い猿が現れて猿島に導き日蓮を救ったという伝説から猿島という名前になったそうな。幕末から第二次世界大戦まで要塞として東京湾を守り、今も砲台や弾薬庫などの遺跡がある。原生林と要塞跡が共生する不思議な島だ。

I visited Sarushima by ferry from Yokosuka for the first time in 20 years. Sarushima is the only natural island in Tokyo Bay. There are no monkeys. It is said that the name Sarushima came from the legend that a white monkey suddenly appeared on Nichiren’s ship when it was hit by a storm and saved Nichiren by guiding him to Sarushima. From the end of the Edo period to World War II, it protected Tokyo Bay as a fortress, and even now there are ruins such as an artillery battery and ammunition storage. It is a mysterious island where primeval forest and fortress remains coexist.
時隔20年，我再次從橫須賀乘坐渡輪前往猿島。猿島是漂浮在東京灣的唯一的自然島。沒有猴子。據說因為過去遭遇時化的日蓮船上突然出現了白猿，將其引導到猿島拯救了日蓮的傳說而成為猿島的名字。從幕府末期到第二次世界大戰為止，作為要塞守護著東京灣，現在也有炮臺和彈藥庫等的遺跡。是原始森林和要塞遺跡共生的不可思議的島。
